Fighting Words - Children’s Writing Centre
A great piece of social entrepreneurship from Irish award winning writer, former teacher and general all-round ledged, Roddy Doyle is about to launch. It is called Fighting Words and is creative writing centre for kids and teachers. The idea is that writers will be in the centre to help kids learn to write and also for interested adults to become involved as both teachers and learners.
Fighting Words is just one branch of Once Upon a School, a remarkable organization attempting to bootstrap projects for kids in public or underprivileged schools.
I heard about Fighting Words through Will Knott on Twitter. Something else Roddy Doyle related recently heard on Twitter via Brian Greene: “Kilbarrack O Bama (I’m black and I’m proud)“.

Hi, I just read your post on ‘fighting words’. I saw the TED presentation by Dave Eggars and am interested in helping out personally but more importantly I may have a potential source of income for the project(no guarantees or promises but they seem to be looking for something like this to fund). If you have any contact details for the organisation or the people behind it then perhaps you could post them or send them to me directly. (There is a fairly urgent deadline on the funding btw)
Warm Regards

It’s fantastic that a resource like this has opened at a particularly insecure time. I teach English (TEFL)in two schools on the Northside. I have taught refugees and would be very interested in helping in any way I can. The thought of not being able to read/write fills me with horror, I have also “finished rearing” !!! four children, and think I have gained some experience, I would be grateful for the opportunity. Thanks Mairead
